Landscaper Struck By Car, Killed On Freedom Pkwy.
Driver Charged With 2nd Degree Vehicular Homicide
ATLANTA — A landscaping worker was struck by a car and killed on Freedom Parkway Wednesday morning, Atlanta police said.
The worker, who was employed by Bromell Manicured Lawns, Inc., a contractor hired by the Georgia Department of Transportation, was using a weed eater to trim the grass in the median of the roadway, police said.
Nicole LaSane was inside her home when she heard the impact. “The guy who hit him, he got out and fell to his knees, and just kept checking on him and kept looking down on him,” LaSane said. “He never left. He never left his side. Never.”
Police identified the driver as Glenn Johnson, 21.Police said that for unknown reasons, the driver left the roadway and struck the landscaper in the median. Johnson faces a charge of Homicide by Vehicle 2nd Degree.
Police did not immediately release the victim’s name, pending notification of his family members.
Tereon White drives a mower for the city of Atlanta. She didn’t know the victim, but said the accident is a tragic reminder of the dangers that come with her job. “This is a very dangerous job. On an every day basis, we’re coming down here and we are cutting, and we can’t see our back,” said White.
