GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Police in Gwinnett County break up what they call a chop shop and the only person arrested was a 17-year-old. Police said they discovered the operation at a home on Roses Creek Drive in Lawrenceville on Monday.

Neighbor Natalie Bull was used to seeing cars at the home all the time.

“Maybe two on this side, one in the grass, I would say five or six. Sometimes they would have the cones out here there was always something going on here,” said Bull.

The yard is clear and the house is quiet now after police busted what they call a chop shop at the home, a place to strip and sell cars and parts. Seventeen-year-old Arensio Rivera is accused of running the show.

Neighbors said they haven’t seen anyone at the home since police broke up the operation. Police said Monday they found parts to more than five different cars and three engines. Police said they discovered the chop shop after a Honda went missing from a nearby apartment complex. The investigation into the stolen car led police to the home.

“Just a lot of cars that just made me think there were a lot of people living there, not that it was something illegal going on,” said Bull.

Now neighbors say they’ll be more aware.

“We’re going to be more alert about things that don’t look right,” said neighbor Veronica Butler.

Police are trying to match the parts with stolen cars in the county. Rivera will stay in jail until a court appearance next week.

DECATUR, Ga. — DeKalb County’s Board of Health says a 39-year-old man has the county’s first human case of West Nile virus this year.

He is currently in the hospital and has some paralysis. His name has not been released.

The board’s director, S. Elizabeth Ford, M.D., says she hopes this case “Will remind everyone to continue using precautions to avoid mosquito bites.”

Also the Fulton County Department of Health and Wellness has confirmed the first human case of West Nile Virus for the 2010 season.

The lab confirmed case involved a 67 year old female residing in Midtown.

The woman, who suffers from underlying health conditions, was hospitalized and has since recovered. Residents are urged to take precautions when outside and to clear areas of standing water, which is where mosquitoes breed.

Elizabeth Ford, M.D.’s advice is to reduce the time you spend outside at dawn and dusk, use insect repellent with at least 30% DEET, wear long sleeves when you’re outside at dawn or dusk, and get rid of standing water on your property.

So far there have been five cases of human West Nile virus in Georgia this year.

LILBURN, Ga. — Dekalb’s Chief Operating Officer has been terminated, effective immediately for what is being described as an inappropriate relationship with another employee.

Today DeKalb CEO Burrell Ellis announced he fired Keith Barker after Barker came to him and divulged he had an affair with an employee in the county’s Watershed Department. Ellis said Barker approached him on his own, and that the CEO was not previously aware any relationship had taken place.

According to Ellis, Barker’s decision to discuss the relationship which is said was “in his past” was prompted by media inquiries about the relationship.

Keith Barker is married.

The COO has only worked in that position for a short time, since January of 2009. He has been with the county a total of 4 years.

Ellis would not define the details of the relationship, only saying it was inappropriate for a member of his top level staff to have an affair with another employee. DeKalb County does not have any policies about inter-office dating.

According to the CEO there have been no complaints filed against Barker, and there are no claims of sexual harassment as were first alleged. The county is currently searching for any emails between the two parties that may have been sent over county computers.

Barker will receive a 6 month severance, valued at more than $100,000. He would not have received that severance had he resigned, instead of terminated.

The woman involved, who we are not naming at this time, has been allowed to keep her job.

STOCKBRIDGE, Ga. — Henry County police said they made a multimillion-dollar drug bust Wednesday night.

A investigation into drug sales in Stockbridge led narcotics agents to a house on Sims Drive. As soon as the agents pulled into the driveway, people inside took off into the woods, police said. After chasing them on foot, police said they caught all five people.

Agents said they found 712 pounds of marijuana on the property. That’s an estimated street value of $3.2 million, according to police.

Four people from metro Atlanta, and one from Tijuana, Mexico, were arrested and taken to the Henry County Jail.

ATLANTA — Police say a MMARTA officer is expected to be fine after a suspected drunken driver crashed into the officer’s cruiser.

The crash happened on the Buford Highway Connector near Armour Drive.

Police believe the woman was driving drunk when she noticed the officer.

Authorities said she hit the brakes, but lost control of the car and rear-ended the officer.

The driver was arrested and faces charges for DUI and following too closely.

JEFFERSON, Ga. — The proprietor of a former grease recycling plant has submitted a new plan to clean up the 90-acre site in the Jackson County community of Talmo.

The Athens Banner-Herald reports that Jackson County Superior Court Judge David Motes had threatened to jail Agri-Cycle owner Richard Harville unless he delivered a workable cleanup plan this week.

The plan lays out a system for processing or removing nearly 10 million gallons of grease and water, but Agri-Cycle, which has filed for bankruptcy, does not have the money to carry out the plan.

Motes found Harville in contempt of court earlier this month for failing to comply with an order enforcing a 2007 order from the state Environmental Protection Division to close the plant and make plans to clean up the site.

LOS ANGELES — Authorities say Rapper T.I. and wife Tameka Cottle have been arrested on drug charges after police said they smelled marijuana coming from their car.

Los Angeles sheriff’s deputy Mark Pope says the arrests for possession of a controlled substance came late Wednesday night on Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood during a traffic stop.

He says the 29-year-old T.I., whose real name is Clifford Harris Jr., and Cottle, a 36-year-old singer, were booked at the West Hollywood sheriff’s station and bail was set at $10,000.

Pope says he’s not sure if they were still being held early Thursday morning.

T.I., a key performer in the current top box office movie “Takers,” was released from a federal prison in Arkansas in December after serving several months for illegal firearms possession.

TMZ reports that T.I. is on probation stemming from the prison term.
